최악의 조개 채취량 위반 - 조개류 채취 1일 한도의 35배에 달해!
피피조개 5250개를 불법 채취, 베이 오브 플렌티 역사상 최악의 수산물 채취 규제를 위반한 3명의 마케투 남자들이 체포됐다.
키위농장 근로자인 세실 토마스(49) 등 3명의 형제는 피피 조개 하루 채취 허용량인 150개의 거의 35배에 달하는 량을 불법 채취해 타우랑가 지방법원에서 유죄가 선고됐다.
법원은 이 3형제에게 지난 8월26일 마케투 해안가에서 가족의 장례식(tangi)을 위해 조개를 채취하면서 몇 마리를 잡고 있는지 세보지도 않았고 심지어 지역 마오리 부족(iwi)으로부터 관습법에 따른 허가증도 얻지 않았다고 밝혔다.
불법 채취된 조개는 수산부 직원들의 해안가 정규 순찰 중 이 3형제의 차량에서 발견됐으며 3명 모두 하루 허용량을 알고 있었다고 자백했다.
압수된 조개는 모두 바다로 돌려보냈으며 그들 차량은 영구 몰수됐다.
이안 토마스 판사는 “이 사건은 지난 5년간 베이 오브 플렌티에서 적발된 최악의 조개 채취 위반 사례로 1월 16일 마지막 선고 재판이 열릴 예정이다”고 밝혔다.
토마스 판사는 지난 7월 왕가마타 해안에서 자신의 21세 성년식 파티를 위해 1070개의 피피 조개를 채취해 체포된 마타마타 거주 파비안 라이더씨에게 120시간의 공공근로 명령과 함께 차량을 영구 몰수한 바 있다.

Paua: measure the greatest length of the shell in a straight line.
