한국인 관광객 버스 전복사고 - 차량 결함인가?

Police will start talking to passengers and the driver of a bus carrying 15 Korean tourists which crashed in south Waikato on Saturday, causing three women to lose their right arms.

The women, two aged 19 and one 34, each lost an arm following the crash on a section of State Highway 1 known as Tar Hill, 12km south of Tokoroa, on Saturday afternoon.

They were in Waikato Hospital along with two 13-year-old girls and a 48-year-old man.

Senior Sergeant Murray Hamilton of Taupo Police said all the passengers and possibly the tour guide were Korean residents, while the Auckland-based driver was also Korean.

This had made interviewing people on Sunday difficult, he said.

"We have just been arranging for interpreters today," Mr Hamilton told NZPA.

"We hope to start the interviewing process on Monday."

Mr Hamilton said the passengers not taken to Waikato Hospital were mostly in Hamilton, though he was unsure if the driver had gone back to Auckland.

Family members had begun to arrive from Korea on Sunday.

He said the crash occurred when the bus left the left hand side of the road. The driver attempted to correct this but in doing so lost control and the bus rolled and then slid for about 30m on its side.

The bus was taken to Rotorua following the crash, where it was likely to be inspected on Monday.

Mr Hamilton said that inspection was likely to determine whether the driver would be charged.

"If there is no vehicle fault that we can find then it's likely to come down to driver fault," he said.

Waikato Hospital said earlier on Sunday that one of the 19-year-olds who lost her arm was stabilising in the intensive care unit as of 9am.

Of the others to lose their right arm, the 34-year-old woman was in a serious condition in the high dependency unit, and the other 19-year-old was in the same unit in a stable condition.

Two 13-year-old girls are also in the hospital. One is in a comfortable condition with head injuries, while the other is comfortable in a ward with a right orbit fracture.

The male, 48, was in a stable condition in the orthopaedic ward.
