20 이하 월드컵 축구, 5월30일부터 뉴질랜드에서 킥오프
20세 미만 월드컵 축구대회(FIFA U-20 World Cup New Zealand 2015)이 5월30일(토)부터 6월20일(토)까지 뉴질랜드 남북섬 주요 도시에서 열린다.
럭비에 대한 뉴질랜드인들의 뜨거운 열기만큼은 아니겠지만 이번 월드컵 축구에 대한 국민적 열기도 대단할 것으로 기대되면 전세계 축구팬들의 이목이 뉴질랜드에 집중될 것이며, 대회 관전을 위해 뉴질랜드를 방문하는 관광객도 이 기간 중 크게 늘어날 것으로 예상된다.
아쉽게도 한국은 아시아 지역 예선전에서 탈락했고, 북한은 아시아 대표 중 한팀으로 참가한다.
FIFA 성인 월드컵 다음으로 중요한 국제 스포츠 대회인 20세 이하 청소년 축구 월드컵 대회를 통해 차세대 월드컵 스타들이 탄생하기도 한다. 디에고 마라도나, 리오넬 메시, 크리스티아누 호날두 등도 이 대회가 낳은 대표적 스타 선수들이다.
대회는 각 대륙 지역 예선을 거쳐 선발된 24개 나라의 청소년 대표팀이 출전한다.
대륙별로 유럽(6), 아시아(4), 아프리카(4), 북중미(4), 남미(4), 대양주(1) 그리고 주최국 뉴질랜드 등이다. ‘
2015년 뉴질랜드 대회 2년 뒤인 2017년 대회는 한국에서 개최되기 때문에 대한축구협회 직원들도 뉴질랜드 경기장을 방문해 대회 참관할 것으로 알려졌다.
경기는 오클랜드, 황가레이, 해밀턴, 뉴플리머스, 웰링톤을 비록한 북섬 5개 도시, 그리고 크라이스트처치, 더니든 등 남섬 2개 도시 등 전국 7개 도시에서 열린다.
뉴질랜드가 출전하는 1차 조별리그 3개 경기는 5월30일 우크라이나와 벌이는 대회 개막전을 비롯, 6월2일 미국과 오클랜드 노스하버 경기장에서, 이어 미얀마와 최종 예선전은 6월5일 웰링턴에서 개최된다.
북한은 6월1일 오후4시 뉴플리머스경기장에서 헝가리와 예선 첫 경기를, 대망의 결승전과 3,4위전은 6월 20일 오클랜드 노스하버 경기장에서 치러진다.
