뉴질랜드 첫발, 영어권으로 들어왔으니 이제 나도 솰라솰라 할 날이 오겠지. 매일 현지 아이들과 학교생활을 하는 아이들은 두말할 것도 없고, 엄마인 나도 덤으로 공짜 유학이라니 이게 왠 떡일까, 학창 시절 어학 연수 한번 가보지 못한 한을 여기서 푸는구나 했더니만, 실상은 냉정했다.
버거킹, 맥도널드. 해외 어딜 가나 친숙하게 들어갈 수 있는 패스트푸드점에서 에미의 영어실력이 바닥까지 드러나는 첫 수모를 당한다.
“어….넘버 원 콤보 플리즈” (제발 암말 말고 그냥 그것만 달라고…)
하지만 뭔가 계속해서 질문을 해 대는 이건 뭐지? 한두 마디도 아니고 아주 한참을 되 묻는 이 청년.
“넘버 원 플리즈”
아이들 표정 민망해서 구겨진다. 얼른 지갑 열고 계산할 준비 태세. 그런데 이 청년 날 보더니 한숨 팍 쉰다. 이건 무슨 의미지? 영어를 못하는 이 동양 여자를 한심하다는 듯이 보는 건가. 그러게 작작 좀 빨리 말했어야지. 게다가 뒤에 줄 서서 기다리는 사람들이 (키는 좀 커) 정수리에서 내려다보면서 구경한다. 아 죽갔다. 음식 나오자 마자 확인도 안하고 얼른 들고 도망치듯 카운터를 벗어난다.
패스트 푸드 주문점에서의 에피소드는 가지각각이다. 어떤 분은 무조건 카운터 앞에서 ‘예스’만 되풀이 했다가 콜라가 대짜로 나오는걸 눈물을 머금고 들고 나오기도 하고, 어떤 분은 온갖 시럽이 뒤범벅된 아이스크림을 받아 아이에게 원망을 사기도 했단다. (그냥 먹어!)
한국에서 영어를 전공하신 분은 물론이고, 영어하면 그래도 한 가닥 하셨다는 분들도 뉴질랜드의 고품격(?) 영국식 영어를 접하시면 그것이 얼마나 경솔한 자만이었는지 깨달으신다. /r/발음이 없어지고 여기에 각종 모음이 사전에서는 찾는 것과는 다르게 쓰여져서 그나마 아는 단어도 안들렸던게 당연하다.
8이라는 숫자 Eight은 /아잇/으로, 알파벳 r은 /아/라고 발음하는 식이다.
게다가 안타까운 사실은 우리가 영어를 못하는 것에 현지인들에 대한 배려는 그리 살갑지 않다는 것이다. 패스트푸드점에서 그 청년의 한숨이나 마켓 캐셔 앞에서 인상 쓰는 할머니들을 만나 본적있는 분들은 공감하실 듯하다. 영어를 못하는 외국인이 아니라, 좀 심하게 말하자면 그저 말을 더듬는 좀 모자란 사람 취급을 당하기도 한다는 뜻이다.
타우랑가는 특히 외국인들이 다른 도시에 비해 많지 않고 (유학생인 우리에게는 장점이지만) 그저 한 곳에서 나고 자라 은퇴한 노인들이 대부분이라 그리 멀티컬처럴하지 않아서라는 이유도 있을 것이다. 그래서 우리가 아예 ‘나는 영어를 잘 못해’ 라고 이실직고 하고 배려를 구하면 친절하게 대해주지만, 그렇지 않으면 시큰둥하게 말도 잘 안하는 이상한 사람이라는 인상을 받는 모양이다.
요는 이렇다. 아이들이든 엄마들이든 그저 영어권에 발을 들이면 영어는 그냥 익혀지는 거라고 생각한다면 오산이라는 거다. 내가 할 줄 아는 말이라야 들리기도 하는 법이니까. 기를 쓰고 영어공부에 전념 해서 부디 애들 시켜서 전화 받고, 음식 주문하는 엄마 되지 않기를 바란다.
